Fine hair may be quick to dry and easier to manage (read: less frizz and fewer tangles), but anyone blessed with this hair type also knows the other side of the coin. Even with the best curling irons or hair dryer brushes at your disposal, fine hair often has trouble holding a style, which can make it look limp and lifeless. Enter the texturizing spray. It can help add volume, definition, and provide the grip thin strands needs to maintain a style, whether curls or an updo for a special occasion.

Because fine hair also happens to be prone to greasiness, stylists we spoke with say it's important to find a product that is dry, lightweight, and can even help absorb some of that excess oil. A quick cheat is to keep an eye out for buzzwords like "light" or "dry." Experts also recommend searching for ingredients known as silica-based compounds, which help plump the hair by gradually strengthening it and helping prevent breakage (more on that later).

What to consider

Type

When shopping, be sure to pick a texturizing spray that’s specifically formulated for fine hair. These products are generally considered lightweight and dry. "The spray should leave hair feeling soft and flexible rather than crunchy or sticky," says Natalie Lamorena, celebrity stylist and owner of Polished Pub Hair and Nail Bar in Park Ridge, New Jersey. Since fine hair is easily weighed down, you should try to steer clear of products containing heavy oils or silicones. These can make fine hair feel limp and greasy, Lamorena says. For best results, stylists recommend an aerosol formula, since they're better equipped to evenly deliver a light mist.

Ingredients

Look for texturizing sprays with silica-based compounds, including dimethicone or cyclomethicone, says Mandy Pulse, stylist and salon owner of Salon Inspire in Kansas City, Missouri. "These ingredients will extend the life of your desired look by absorbing oils and adding grip to the hair, creating a fuller, more voluminous appearance," she says. Additional ingredients to look for include mineral zeolite, which provides a rough, matte finish that adds the volume fine hair needs. Lightweight hydrating ingredients, like aloe vera and glycerin, are also helpful, since fine hair can become dry with too much texturizing product, Lamorena says.

How we chose

To find the best texturizing spray for fine hair, I consulted four professional hair stylists to find out what to look for (and what to avoid), plus tapped our team of beauty experts for their tried-and-true favorites. I then evaluated each texturizing spray based on its ingredients and efficacy.

After considering over 10 sprays, our fine-haired editors gave Living Proof the top spot for its ability to add next-level volume to hair even well into the next day without making it crunchy. We also weren't surprised when Lamorena recommended the brand's texturizing spray for its superior volume-boosting abilities. "This spray uses a patented molecule that adds instant lift and fullness," she says. "It provides weightless texture, making it great for fine or limp hair."

Users say you don't need much to get the results you're after, either. A little goes a long way to amp up limp and lifeless hair. We also love that it doubles as a heat protectant up to 410 degrees Fahrenheit, too. One of our testers also raved that the spray had a great scent, though other opinions were varying.

"It's great for all hair types, [and those who want] to fluff up the hair and add weightless volume," she says. The product is powered by microfibers that make hair appear fuller and denser without leaving any crunchy residue in its wake.

We found a little bit goes a long way. The aerosol can delivers a light and even mist to help you avoid over-saturation. Plus, results are long-lasting, too. The brand claims you'll reap the benefits of this hair product for a full 24 hours.

  • Stylists Say This Is A Must-Buy Product To Give Fine Hair More Volume (18)Long-lasting
Cons

If your fine hair happens to be oil-prone, Pulse points to Redken's Dry Texture Finishing Spray. "With ingredients like silica, hydrolyzed wheat protein (a protein that strengthens the hair and helps build body without weighing it down, contributing to a thicker appearance), and zeolite, the spray is made with a unique blend of ingredients that work together to provide lift, texture, and long-lasting volume without making the hair feel heavy or sticky," Pulse says.

Users say it really does deliver impressive density, even on the finest hair (one user even tested it during a Southern summer). They are, however, divided on the scent—some love it, while others can't stand it.

Oribe Signature Dry Texturizing Spray

  • Stylists Say This Is A Must-Buy Product To Give Fine Hair More Volume (22)Doubles as a dry shampoo
Cons
  • Stylists Say This Is A Must-Buy Product To Give Fine Hair More Volume (23)Some users say the scent is too strong

If your roots look limp and lifeless, you have to try this dry shampoo/texturizing spray hybrid, says Lamorena. The lightweight and invisible formula is both volumizing and texturizing, but also works to absorb any excess oil on the scalp and strands. The result: Lifted roots and a more lush-looking style.

We love that it has some hydrating properties, too, so hair won't become dull and prone to breakage. The formula also includes mango and aloe extracts for this purpose, plus Oribe's signature complex, which adds a nice bonus of UV protection. It's definitely a splurge, but the volume and boost of hydration it adds is worth the price.

Best Buildable Spray

Amika Un.done Volume and Matte Texture Spray

Pros

  • Stylists Say This Is A Must-Buy Product To Give Fine Hair More Volume (26)Great scent
Cons
  • Stylists Say This Is A Must-Buy Product To Give Fine Hair More Volume (27)Some users say it doesn't provide as much hold as they'd like

For maximum versatility, Lamorena suggests this spray from Amika, which she calls highly-buildable. Add just a touch of tousle for everyday wear, or layer it on for intense volume on the days you need it most. "It has a matte finish, perfect for creating fullness and definition in fine hair," says Lamorena. "It’s lightweight and doesn’t leave any sticky residue, either."

Like most of Amika's hair products, we like that this spray is budget-friendly, but highly-effective. We also love the scent and the fact that it comes in a travel-sized can that meets TSA requirements for frequent fliers, too.

Best For Dry Hair

Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray

Pros
  • Stylists Say This Is A Must-Buy Product To Give Fine Hair More Volume (29)Offers hold, volume, and smoothing properties
  • Stylists Say This Is A Must-Buy Product To Give Fine Hair More Volume (30)Great scent
Cons
  • Stylists Say This Is A Must-Buy Product To Give Fine Hair More Volume (31)Some users say the nozzle delivers too much product

Texturizing spray has a tendency to dry out strands, and even fine hair needs a little bit of moisture. For those with damaged or brittle hair, we recommend Moroccanoil's iteration. It's infused with argan oil to improve elasticity and smooth hair. Unlike other options, the spray doesn't make it hard to comb through your hair afterwards.

Still, it contains ingredients, like zeolite and hydrolyzed wheat protein, to lend grip and add texture. Users say it's a great all-in-one product, offering both volume and hold. And, as a nice bonus, we love the way it smells, too.
